PORTS 1961: PARIS
INTRODUCTION // After completing the Ports1961, London, [Spring 2010] and the 2750 sq.ft. Ports1961 Shanghai Flagship Store [Spring 2011], Archi-Tectonics started on the design for the third store for Ports1961, the 5000 sf Flagship Store in Paris, located on the prestigious St Honore. The two-story space and basement is located in the new Mandarin Hotel.
CONCEPT // To connect the two floors fluidly we opened a large atrium in the existing concrete slab, where a grand sweeping steel and wood circular stair occupies a generous double-height space. The stair was custom-designed in a solid sand-colored steel and was set against a golden backdrop of Venetian ribbed patterned plaster by Signature Murale, Paris.
Retail areas on both floors unfold around the sweeping movement of the stairs, sales areas downstairs connect to a more private retail area upstairs, to end in the completely private VIP “living room”.
MATERIALS // The ground floor has delicate Venetian plaster walls with 3D patterns forming large bands which frame the Ports Collection in a subtle way. The upper floors continue the Venetian plaster but in warmer golden tones. The many recessed glass niches combine surfaces with glass mirror backing with real mirrors, which are backlit, thus allowing the Ports accessories to “float” in space.
In the dressing rooms, one is surrounded by golden metallic padded walls, which form a shimmering backdrop for the full height mirrors with mirror frame. The fitting rooms “frame” the client in an ingenuous set of recessed lighting and pivoting mirrors, which generously reveal all body angles in this crystalline space. The furniture is from Minotti [DDC, NYC] and the oversized carpets are from Jan Kath. All upper floors are in soft gray mat Siberian Hardwood and the Stone pattern on the ground floor is a limestone from Stonesource NY.
DESIGN DETAILS // For the Paris store a series of elements were custom-designed by Archi-Tectonics. We developed and designed polished stainless steel bottom-lit freestanding hanging racks with intricate angles. We also designed similar racks, which are suspended in the VIP room on the second floor. Seats are integrated in the bay windows, and repeated in the generous VIP dressing room.
The lighting is designed by Herve Descottes from L’Observatoire. Indirect led lighting is used to enhance the space’s fluid geometry, with light coves concealed in the walls and in the pearly ceiling surface, thus creating a contrasting glow on the clothing and adjacent surfaces.
