The 4,000 sf, full floor D+L Loft is situated in the heart of Manhattan’s trendy East Village and has a 360-degree view of the city. To highlight the loft’s expansiveness, we exposed the low slung, concrete plank ceiling and designed the spaces around a translucent material core. The center, honeycomb-like panels fold around the loft’s large truss and contain all private areas, such as bathrooms, walk-in closets, and a powder room.
Bent walnut forms niches and opens to a communal space. Formations include zones for dressing, sleeping, and relaxing in the bedroom, as well as a large library and guestroom. In the bathroom, a continuous surface made of waterproof fiber-reinforced plaster envelopes the sink, shapes the shower basin, and nests the bathtub.
We developed a translucent honeycomb panel with Panelite, a material design firm. Rather than cladding the honeycombs with a translucent plate, we used poured resin to create soft, bendable curves. The result’s intricacy and fluidity are highlighted with recessed lighting.
