We were invited by the Governor of the Shaanxi Province to design a new cultural neighborhood for Yulin, China.

Inspired by two of Yulin’s architectural traditions, Hutongs and Folk-Houses, we designed a set of distinct buildings connected by exterior courtyards, gardens, plazas, interior gallerias, and winter gardens. These intertwined zones respond to the strong climate and connect an art museum, concert hall, offices, cultural building, five-star hotel, public ice rink, mall, cinema, service apartments, gallery, and additional housing.

Applying the intimacy of Hutongs and Folk-Houses to modern building types fuses the ancient and modern traditions with local and global cultures, creating a relaxed and sustainable neighborhood for Yulin.
