This project goes along with our investigations into New Solids; here, a Double Solid. No longer minimal, light and thin, but full-bodied, soft, glowing and sometimes transformative, these solids give us comfort, ground us, and wrap us in a soft embrace. The Double Skin promotes easy maintenance, acoustic insulation, and low energy use. Its overall shape, a recognizable form, creates an identity, and character to the hotel, morphing from the triangular site up, to form an Icon.
The Soho hotel is located on a triangular site on the edge of Soho, NYC, with great views in 4 directions. The Double Skin of the building morphs: it creates privacy for the hotel rooms, transparency for the community spaces at ground level, the 2nd-floor hotel lobby, and the sky lobby, and also the notion of a solid body within a glass envelope.
